Spoilt for choice when deciding where to go for a beach walk in the Garden Route.

On New Years Day, 2025 Bryan and I decided to go and enjoy a long walk on the beach in our area. Low tide was at about 10.40am which meant we didn’t need to rush to get out (which was a good thing as we had been dancing the night away to Watershed at the Masithandane New Year’s Eve event at the Scarab Market the night before). Which, by the way, was a brilliant evening!

It was a really beautiful day, the sky was blue and there was a slight breeze, which was ideal, because it was a pretty hot day. We slapped on a load of sun lotion, grabbed our hats and water and decided to head to Kleinkranz to start our walk.

We took the Kleinkranz turning off the N2 just before Wilderness (coming from the direction of Sedgefield and Knysna), followed Protea Lane past the Augusta restaurant on the right and then took the second right after that, down Hibiscus Street. We followed Hibiscus Street all the way to where it meets Pluimbos Street. We parked on the side of the road there, close to the wooden boardwalk steps that lead down to the beach.

There were a few people on the beach when and where we arrived on the sand, but what always happens on the beaches here in the Garden Route is that you will find plenty of people close to the entrance to the beach, but once you walk about 50 meters in either direction from the steps or entrance, you virtually have the entire stretch of sandy beach to yourselves. New Year’s Day on Kleinkranz beach was no exception.

Kleinkranz beach is fairly flat and wide, so if you go at low tide, it is not a difficult walk. There is plenty of hard sand to walk on. We didn’t wear our swim wear, because there can be some pretty fierce waves along this stretch, but with the waves breaking over our feet and the slight breeze, we were not too hot and it was a fabulous walk.

There were lots of Paragliders flying along the ridge towards Gericke’s Point in Sedgefield, but on the ground itself, it was almost empty. We passed one couple and their dog on the way up the beach and another couple and their dog on the way back.

The water was crystal clear and we were keeping our eyes out for dolphins, as they can often be seen from here, but on this particular day, we didn’t manage to spot any.

Bryan and I walked for 11.5kms in total, which took us about 2.5 hours. We walked up the beach towards Gericke’s Point until the rocks start (this is 5.75kms from the wooden steps) and then turned around and returned. this might be far for some people, but that is the beauty about a walk on the beach, you can go as short or as far as you like.

If you are looking for a fairly flat, quiet and peaceful walk on the beach, with beautiful scenery and the potential to be accompanied by some paragliders, then I would definitely recommend Kleinkranz beach. Just remember, go at low tide, take plenty of water and sun screen and wear a hat to protect you from the sun.

What a perfect start to 2025!
